I'm beginning to believe HFP has outgrown the NVIDIA GeForce 555M. When running HF on my laptop I have to wait and wait and wait after every little change.  Guess I should start looking for a new laptop. Bummer.

  • New mother board on it's way from Asrock. It's a replacement so I hope the new one lasts longer than the last one. It is the same model just with updated BIOS. Should be here by Wednesday. Hope to have the desktop up and running by next Saturday. Then I'll find out for certain if it's Windows 10 that has been causing BSODs or the mother board.

  • LAST DAY: August 08, 2016

Flight Center post ends. Me very  after working with these folks for 11 years. Now to another post where there's more risk of catching cold or flu, have to listen to screaming kids rather than jet engines and forced to take holidays off missing out on the time and a half pay (over $24/hour) but I'll also be forced to work some weekends which could potentially interfere with theater work. I'm soooooo bummed.

My life is so pathetic I don't even sleep with myself anymore.

My neighborhood is so noisy now that the kids are out of school, I have to mow my lawn just to get a little peace and quiet!!!

  • I just landed a paying job with the theater! Woo-hoo!!!

And I'm surprised no Seinfeld fans replied to my last entry below. Not that there's anything wrong with that. LOL I'm not a huge fan but I enjoyed the show while it was on. So for those who are fans and never said anything....."NO SOUP FOR YOU!"

  • Sure- Microsoft techs can't fix the issues: 1) a Windows update from Microsoft that's not downloading and 2) Windows Defender keeps rebooting the computer unless it's off. *Solution*- reset Windows 10. All your files will be saved. They were. It just deleted all the PROGRAMS I had installed which did NOT happen when I upgraded from 7 to 10.

8 1/2 hours wasted when I should have been working on video stuff that needs to get done and the laptop still isn't back in order yet.

  • I can't believe a Microsoft tech just gave me the BIGGEST B.S. answer I've ever gotten from any tech anywhere. (pardon my abbreviation)

My laptop kept rebooting automatically every 10-15 mins with the error message "page-fault-in-nonpaged-area (wdfilter.sys). I looked the error message up and found a temporary solution in the MS forums which was to disable Windows Defender. There was a comment that someone thought it might be an update issue with Defender and disabling it would stop the rebooting. Not knowing or finding anything more, I contacted MS support through their chat option. Chad- the MS tech- after receiving the above info, actually wrote "As long as you keep WD disabled the problem won't occur again." ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I wrote back "What's to keep my computer safe when online?" He suggested free versions of Norton or Avast! He also recommended I do a Windows reset (a new feature in W10) but this would eliminate all the apps/icons on my desktop AND in DellDock. so I would essentially have to spend hours on end setting my computer back up the way I have it. I'll search for another solution which may involve contacting support again and hoping I get a different person that knows what they're doing.

For crying out loud! Like this>>>

But the extended Conan the Barbarian soundtrack is excellent.

I'm actually considering combining the original album (vinyl) soundtrack with the missing bits of music from the extended version. Then I can have the best of both worlds even if there are a few pops and clicks from the record- I don't mind. I might be able to EQ some of the excess noise out with SoundForge. You don't like Conan the Barbarian do you? ;^) Is that the movie soundtrack or TV show?

Um. Soundtrack to the 1982 film. Which I do love. That live-action series wasn't very good.

Wasn't sure if it was the new Conan movie from a couple years ago. I have that on my DVR right now but haven't watched it yet. Is it worth the time?

  • Recently listened to the extended soundtracks of Star Wars, Empire & Jedi. Whoever did the remix did a very, very poor job. The brass is WAY TOO LOUD and the strings are practically non-existent. Wonder if the person mixing it plays a brass instrument. (?)

Think I figured out why I don't like the soundtracks to Phantom Menace, Clone Wars and Sith Revenge as much as the first trilogy. 1st) I think John Williams was trying to be too epic sounding- too many long themes i.e. the one with the choir and 2nd) he hardly used the main theme during the action sequences. The original had a driving beat that fit the scene extremely well but the new trilogy's soundtrack is more flowy- not as many twists and turns.

    Bummed.

Oh well, off to do something fun.

I've noticed this happening with soundtrack remasters. Often these are done without the input of the original composer/editor/mixer/engineer, so you end up with a mix that's what the remaster engineer thinks sounds good, which might not be what the original intent was. This also happens with remasters of old movies and TV shows--I'll use the Star Trek ToS Blu-ray as an example. Yes, to my eye the remaster is visually pleasing, but CBS really bumped up the contrast a lot--given that the original airing was in the mid-1960's when large portions of the viewing audience would have had black and white TV sets, I'm willing to bet that the brilliant Jerry Finnerman didn't intend for that much contrast. Using the Conan the Barbarian extended CD as another example, I think that's a very good remaster. It's a great mix with better balance of the sound spectrum, but it's also notably more compressed than the 1983 albm. Comparing waveforms between the releases, it's obvious they've raised the overall sound level about 3dB.

They should always consult the composer when they re-do a soundtrack. The composer knows exactly how it should sound. As to Trek- I heard at first Spock was originally supposed to have a greenish color but there wasn't good enough communication twixt pre and post production teams so post thought the greenish color was accidental. How true that is I'm not sure as the source was my uncle who's a huge Trek fan. I must admit though, there are a few scenes throughout the series where I swear there's a little hint of green on Nimoy. That was before all the changes made to the original so now they've probably color corrected some things too. I don't mind some of the changes they've made i.e. more realistic looking planets and such but I wish they'd make the original original shows available for comparison. I've got a few on VHS tape recorded from TV but can't play them anymore because the VCR gets tape hungry. chomp, chomp, chomp.

Spock is actually supposed to be yellowish, and, yes the old stories about the lab color-correcting Spock to a normal skin tone are true. Same with the initial screen tests for the green Orion girl! In 1964 no one was painting people green and yellow!

Oh, the ToS Blu-ray contains the remaster AND original. :-)

  • Waiting for W8.1 to finish downloading. Think I'm up and running. Hoping anyway. On a "Frasier" marathon while I wait. Won't get to download HF3P tonight. And the next three days I work both jobs so I'll have to squeeze it in when I can. I sense sleep deprivation on the horizon.
