need help with this effect

Hi there,

I used Titler 4 Pro to create this Back to the Future Title, with the intent of changing it to different titles for a few different projects.

Here is what i came up with but i need help with a lighting effect on the title.. Can anyone help with this effect?

Here is what i created and then take a look at the original.. Thanks in advance!

  • Your typography looks great! In terms of adding the effects, here are a couple of things to try:

    1. To create that glow effect, use the glow/neon glow effects and animate them to fade in and out.

    2. To make that line of light that comes down over the title (0:31 in the original video) add a plane layer the color of the light over the text, and animate a rectangular mask to go from the top to the bottom of the title. Just feather the mask out, and set the blend mode to overlay, and it should work.

The link you posted doesn't seem to work so I can't see what you have done already. Can you check the link and see if it's working?

Did you get/use the Back to the Future font?

    Hi there,

Hmmm, the link is working on my end but let me try another way.

I do indeed have that font. Basically mine looks exactly like official title, just need help with lighting effect from original..

Here is a different link ... The link is to my blog.. I just loaded it so it should be the first video you see, Thanks!

  • Tried your suggestions.. hmm, I'm having difficulty with it for sure..

If someone downloads this file i created and attempts to re create the lighting effect, I would appreciate it.. I have tried various ways and so far, not having much luck.

Ok this is real down and dirty because I didn't take any time with it but....

    https://youtu.be/zFNZ0VLFdzs

Duplicate your paragraph(s) and get rid of the 3D outline on the top paragraph(s) so you're left with just your main gradients on those. Adjust the size and layer depth as needed so you can still see the 3D outline of the lower paragraph(s). In the garbage I knocked up I applied HitFilm Gleam to the lower paragraph using keyframes adjusting the position of the effect to create the top to bottom sweep . Obviously mine is nowhere near "right" but hopefully this is enough to get you going in the right direction.

  • Thanks boss, I'll give it a shot. :)

  • Guys,  I've tried it all. Very frustrating since i know it can be done,  just can't seem to get it right.  Look at the original video and if anyone can give me more specifics on how to create this effect in HF, I'd appreciate it.

    Ben

  • I downloaded the clip and I'm going to give it a shot. If it works, I'll tell you what I did.

  • Thanks Aidin, I appreciate it.

  • I found this for After Effects but need to see how it's done specifically in HF. .. from what I see here,  it shouldn't be an issue..

Ben, send me your project as well, Hitfilm and Titler Pro. Might not get to it till Sunday night, but I have some ideas of my own, and I'm about to look at that tutorial you posted.

Edit: Yeah. Watched Tutorial. Exactly how I was thinking of doing it. I could do a famous, long-winded explaination, but it's just faster to build it. BBIAB.

Ok, Have a prebuild. It'll have a "NOTES" Composite shot where I talk a bit what I did.

    I did something a little different with this. There's a 3D camera involved. ;-)

    It looks like this:

  • Awesome,  when I get home from out of town, I'll take a look. Thanks as always!

    Ben

  • Mike,

The original effect lighting goes from top to bottom,  is that easy based on the technique you used?  The original file is shown above..

  • One more thing,  someone else posted their rendition of this effect using vegas and titler pro. It's not bad either!

Ben, when you look at my project file, I have two lighting effects going on. There's a "sweep" moving from top to bottom and a point light sweeping left to right. Honestly, if you just turn off the point light, you get the "proper" effect. I added the kight as an experiment. The project is annotated, but if you have questions, drop them in this thread. That will help anyone else who might have grabbed my project.

  • Mike,

here is anothet recent tutorial but it utilizes vegas and Tit ler pdo 4 which i now have.. i know you use vegas so anything useful here that can be duplicated in HF?

Ok, First, FYI, Titler Pro runs in Hitfilm 3 Pro.

Ok, tell you what. Take the project file I gave you and kill the light and camera. Then look at what I built and compare it to the AE and Titler Pro /Vegas tutorials.

All Three of us used the same font. We all made three copies of each line, from bottom up: Outline, Hightlight and Fill. We all colored Outline and Fill with gradients. Hightlight is a copy of Outline and a masked shape to drive the glow. In Vegas you parent the Outline to the Highlight, in AE, you set an Alpha Matte composite mode, and in Hitfilm you use the Set Matte effect. (Remember this. Especially about AE. When an AE tutorial sets a Track Alpha by pick whipping another layer and choosing a mask mode, you are using a Set Matte effect in Hitfilm. This will make a lot of AE tutorials that much easier to "translate."

Now, my version I didn't warp the text, I made a wide angle camera and tilted it. But if you applied Bezier Warp to the text you could warp it in 2D. Change my Animation Keys and Key the Opacity of "to the Future" for a fade in. I set the width of OUTLINE to 15. Try 20. You might want to turn up the Glow.

  • Awesome  awesome,  I get home tonight,  looking forward to trying that. :) thanks Mike

Ben, I did another version, which is a bit closer to the "real" logo.

The problem I found is that the source font from online, of course, doesn't have the perspective warping found in the actual poster. This is why, in my initial version, I cheated things into 3D--the tilting of the layers and the wide angle of the camera made it very easy to get the "angled" look of the actual logo.

In this case I had to play around with the Bezier Warp. I'm not really happy with the look of the warp, but I have other things to get to tonight. I figure you could adjust the warps yourself. But the Warp was a bitch that I spent well over 90- minutes playing with. For perspective the entire first version of this animation was built in under 30. So that's just way way too long to screw around with the warp. Sigh.

I didn't update the NOTES composite shot, so here's what's going on:

Text 01 OUTLINE, HIGHLIGHT and FILL are the word "BACK" Each of these segments is it's own embedded comp. HIGHLIGHT is an embedded copy of OUTLINE using Set Matte to mask out a simple while plane with a feathered mask that makes the highlight sweep. (Incidentally, when you open the project it will tell you a file is missing--this is just a copy of the Back to the Future poster I downloaded from Google. It was sitting around as reference--the colors for the graident fills on the Text Fills and Outlines was sampled directly from the poster, and I was looking at it as a BG layer while trying to warp the text.)

Text 02 is the words "To The Future" and is built the same way as Text 01

There is the comp REVEAL MASK which is just a gradient on a plane which is used in LOGO COMPOSITE to fade in TEXT 02.

Over in LOGO COMPOSITE you'll see each TEXT is stacked in order (from top to bottom) FILL (orange) HIGHLIGHT (sweep) OUTLINE (blue). Each TEXT is parented to a point.

The Bezier Warp was applied directly to each TEXT layer. Basically I adjusted the Warp on each TEXT FILL layer, then copied the finished warp to it's OUTLINE and HIGHLIGHT layer.

A Set Matte effect was applied to each TEXT 02 layer. this is set to point to the REVEAL MASK composite, which is animated to reveal the TEXT 02 layers.

Both HIGHLIGHT layers have their own glow effect with a grade layer providing another glow.

As stated earlier, all of this was very quick and easy to set up--except the damn Bezier Warp, which, in Hitfilm 2 it seems you have to adjust all the points using the sliders--I certainly can't grab and drag them with the mouse, which would have been easier....

Anyway--Project File: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p7je8xh2g6a76hn/Back to the Future Version 2.hfp?dl=0

    And here's how it looks:

  • Mike,

awesome job.  I tell ya, I really like Titler Pro 4 because I created the title effect with the warp in mere seconds.

Im going to open your project in a while and see what you did to create this. As always, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to create this.  I begin to appreciate more and more what it takes to create these effects. It's impressive that they created this effect over 30 years ago and it still looks cool.

Have a great day and I'll chat wit you here soon. :)

Greetings everyone... Hello again Ben and Triem23 :)

Here's my similar version of previous Sony Vegas one, but composited with HitFilm3 Express.

A good start for exercising HF3 Express...

*This is my post here... how to make the youtube thumbnail appear here?
** Edit: Ok, thumbnail now appear. Thanks @Triem23 & @StormyKnight! I copy-pasted https:// in insert/edit link. Refresh this page and now appear.

@Setiawan thumbnail is just supposed to show up. Sometimes the forum glitches.

@Life_Leadership since you had the Titler Pro tutorial, I figured I would do "pure" Hitfilm for fun. Titler Pro would make setting up the text a lot easier.

Setiawan - To get the preview, instead of copying and pasting the actual address link, look below the video (on youtube)- you'll see '+Add to', 'Share' and 'More'. Click on share and a direct video link comes up. Copy and paste that link to the forum and you should get this:

Yes, I know it's not Back to the Future, but I already posted both my versions. What?  It's a time machine leaving a flaming trail! Close enough! ;-)

    Hey guys,

So here is my attempt at the Back to the Future opening title using HF 3 Pro.  Thanks to both Mike and Set, I learned how to accomplish this.  I utilized Titler Pro 4 and tweaked the lettering to resemble the official Title almost exactly ( although the free font is accurate, it is not 100% .. I had to tweak each letter and even then, it still wasn't perfect)..

Then i imported two versions of the render.. the main title and an outline only of the main title.  I imported both of these renders into HF and added 2 glow effects, a motion blur and a mask to sweep from top to bottom thru the title on the outline only.

On the main title, i added a motion blur and a slight diffusion to the entire video.  Tell me what you think.. I really appreciate you guys for your help.  Learning is the fun part when you have good help and advice from resident experts. :)

Ben, I think that looks REALLY good, and you're ready to lock that shot and move to the  next one, before you get hung up adjusting glows for a day with no reason. The way your highlight sweep is reacting with your outline layer is giving a really nice bevel look to it.

  • Almost there, you will just have to fine tuning the Glow setting effect to give the 'more realistic' look.

  • Thanks guys,

I'm a recovering perfectionist so I'll tweak it some more.  Set, do you think the glow needs to be reduced?  Just trying to understand what would make it more realistic. . Thanks!

  • Triem23Triem23 Moderator

Ben, your glow hugs the letters a bit more than the film title, the glow on the film title is bluer. In your glow settings turn down the red channel a lot, and the green channel till it looks right.
