Difference between filming slow motion on camera vs slowing the video in post production?

I was wondering if there is a difference between me filming a shot in slow motion on my camera vs editing the clip on my computer and just slowing it down?

  • Yes, if you shoot at a higher frame rate, then slow it down you have more frames to work with and it looks better.

Slowing standard frame rate down in post gives you fewer frames to work with and will not look as smooth.

  • Ah I see, would the same principle also apply for hyperlapse/timelapse as well if I wanted to speed up a video such as me eating food? Would it be better to show me eating the food using hyperlapse vs just speeding up in hitfilm?

Speeding up doesn't matter as much. In that case you're just either removing frames (speeding up footage) or taking fewer frames (time lapse).

  • ok thank you, I will give it a try!
