Exporting 1920x960 without black bars

Hi, I'm trying to edit 360 degree video in Hitfilm but I'm having a small problem. The 360 degree video, which syncs up perfectly with all 360 degree video players, is 1920x960. When imported to Hitfilm, This is obviously slightly smaller than 16:9. However, Hitfilm only exports the video as 16:9 with black bars on the top and bottom. I cannot have these black bars because they mess up the 360 video stitching and leave black circles on the top and bottom of the screen. Is there a way to export the video from Hitfilm so it won't have black bars, or a third party app I can use to remove the bars?

Create a custom preset for 1920x960.

  • I have done that, and tried it with all of the possible aspect ratio options, including 2:1 which I thought would work. It still exports with black bars on top and bottom, and 1.0 is the only useable format. It's most likely because the pixels are non-square.

Is it EXPORTING with bars or are bars appearing on YouTube?

YouTube MUST have 1920x1080. Limitation of YouTube.

A custom 1920x960 should work. Wait, what are your project timeline settings?

  • It's exporting with bars, I haven't uploaded anything to youtube yet (and when I do they will have 360 metadata and therefore aspect ratio won't be a problem). I checked in VLC player that the exported files are not the correct aspect ratio. Here are my project settings. Keep in mind I have tried all the available settings for aspect ratio, only 1.0 represented the original image without distortion (but still had black bars on top and bottom).

Allow me to share a few more images to illustrate my problem.

First, this is an image of the footage in the editor before exporting. It doesn't seem to leave any gaps in the content area.

Next, this is what the final exported video looks like in VLC player. The black bars are clearly visible.

Finally, this is the result of those black bars: When played in 360 degrees, they offset the proper video distortion and create a circular gap as seen here, at  the top of the 360 degree frame:

I think what might be happening is that the video is being squished a bit heightwise, leaving those black bars, but I don't know why.

Edit: actually, that last sentence isn't true, and it is just purely that the export is forcing the bigger aspect ratio. This is obvious because the exported video is 1920x1080, leaving 120 rows of pixels free on top and bottom of the frame.

Second edit: added a less confusing picture.

It sounds like you are editing in 1920x960, but exporting in 1920x1080.

You will need to create a custom export preset at the resolution 1920x960

  • Can we see a full text MediaInfo report from your exported file? Paste the text in this thread.

How do I create a custom export preset?

Edit: I found out how to and will try my custom preset now.

After creating a custom export preset, I get the same result. Black bars on top and bottom.

Edit: going to retry to make sure

Second edit: this worked. I had probably accidentally used the wrong preset for my last export. I wasn't aware that the export preset was separate from the project settings in this version of Hitfilm and that that separate export preset would force an aspect ratio on me, so thank you to the people who helped me learn that.

  • Glad you seem to have it sorted out.

MediaInfo tells all. It clearly showed your previous export(s) were 1080 and not 960.

    Height                                   : 1 080 pixels
