The HitFilm 3 Pro WISHLIST: Closed

The community continues to offer up so may excellent suggestions for new features and ways to improve the program that we wanted to start this thread to compile them into one place and easily keep track of them.
Please note that a wishlist feature being on the list does not mean it is being worked on, or that we even agree it is a good idea. :) We do carefully consider all suggestions, though!
Implemented features will be removed from the list.

The Preset library, Noise generators and the 2D motion tracking that you guys said will be in HitFilm shortly after release.
• How about:
Media Import
• More 3d import formats. For importing camera and point data from 3d software.

The Preset library, Noise generators and the 2D motion tracking that you guys said will be in HitFilm shortly after release.

Thanks, I've added the preset library, though its already been officially stated that it is on the way. Noise Generators have been there all along, in the Noise and Grain folder of the Effects panel. And the 2D motion tracking will indeed be implemented shortly after release, nothing has changed there. We've got guys hard at work on it every day.
Mostly we are interested in features you, the users, might want that we haven't already said are coming, as it will help guide the direction the software takes in the future. Its pleasing to know that you want the features we are currently working on, but since we are already hard at work on them, it doesn't directly impact our plans. Though its good to know we aren't wasting our time on them. :)

Media Import
• More 3d import formats. For importing camera and point data from 3d software.
Tom

You mean more motion tracking data formats? Or do you mean 3D formats, such as you would use to same a 3D project or object?
• Access to more AVI codecs. I'd like to be able to export using an XVID, Indeo, or DIVX codec for a smaller file size. Right now, I have to export either an mp4 or uncompressed AVI and then do the conversion with another program (RAD Video Tools, SUPER, or FreeMake). Same thing with an MOV.

• Maybe there are aleady other solutions for the result, I'm a very newbiew to this, but here are some idea:
- magic wand for making mask, or path? Not just freehand. :) Or making mask from a ... matte.
- difference matte (placing object between a moving foreground and a static background)
hm...I had some other idea, just forgot it... I will return later...

Build-in turbulence & wind effects for particles
Can you explain further? You can already set these up using forces (wind) and offsetting the center of mass (turbulence) - what did you have in mind?
Possibility, to interact layers with particles
Some explanation of the type of interaction you are after would be helpful; the deflectors basically serve this function already, unless you are thinking of something different?
Add a Curves tool. (+10 votes 8-)
This is already on the list.
Textbox will fit while typing (like AE does)
Can you explain this please?
Shortcuts for the most important properties (position, rotation, opactiy). If pressed, only the corresponding property-line will be displayed.
A number of keyboard shortcuts are already listed (under Controls), if you have some other specifics in mind I can add them to the list.
Tools to offset the position of selected layers as a sequence (e.g. +/- [value] frames, so each layer will be [value] frames placed behing the previous one).
I need some explanation of this one. You can drag the position of any layer; what would be the point of the tool you are wanting?
Possibility to set the absolute start frame of a layer (e.g. context-menu or a new layer-time-edit-field?)
Again, you can drag a layer to start at any frame you want; can you explain what you want different?
New column to enable/disable all effects of the corresponding layer(s)
This is already listed.
The rest I'll add to the list straight away, and I can add some of these others if necessary, once I understand what exactly you are after.

Maybe there are aleady other solutions for the result, I'm a very newbiew to this, but here are some idea:
- magic wand for making mask, or path?
The existing masks allow you to control the path with handles, in order to create curved shapes and so forth. Did you have a different type of paths in mind?

Build-in turbulence & wind effects for particles
Yes, you're right - i could do it myself, but a native effect will be more realistic. A turbulence will alter the direction, in which a particle will be emitted, randomly. You can set, how 'depth' this effect should be, i.e. how many other, new particles will follow this direction before a new one will be generated. You don't need to do any keframes here, all properties can be set, e.g. position, acceleration, ... I've saw many tutorials from Andew Kramer, who's using trapcode particular. This plugin has that turbulence field, and it seems to be very cool to have thuch native effect, too...cause the particle simulator in HitFilm is so awesome - right now. The wind effect could be compared with the corresponding particle effect in Cinema 4D (do you own a copy)?
The problem with the forces: I had to keyframe the position and interaction area to follow the particle emitter by hand. The turbulence effect affects the particles while emitting...
Possibility, to interact layers with particles
Particles can dissolve other layers, can take the color of an individial point of the underlying image, and so on.
Textbox will fit while typing (like AE does)
Currently, you had to scale up the textbox to fit the possibile end-dimension of a text, you don't have typed in yet. It would be more intuitive, if you just start typing, and the rectangle will be auto sized. If not in type-mode, you still can resize the box by hand to fit your needs. Btw: If I center a text, why does the rectangle get so large and waste space on the top/bottom?
Shortcuts for the most important properties (position, rotation, opactiy). If pressed, only the corresponding property-line will be displayed.
Well, that's another cool thing coming from AE, which helps to organize your timeline/layers. Example: All layers and all of there properties are collapsed. Now, select a layer and press 'm'. The mask property of that layer (if exists) will automatically expanded - and ONLY this property (with no extra indent). If you now press 'p', ONLY the position property will be expanded (the mask property will be closed automatically) - unless you hold 'Shift' while pressing 'p', so the position properties will be displayed together with the already expanded properties (e.g. the mask properties).
Another shortcut could be 'i' (like AE) which expands automatically ALL keyframed properties of a layer (all other properties aren't shown).
Possibility to set the absolute start frame of a layer (e.g. context-menu or a new layer-time-edit-field?)
How do I drag a layer exactly to specific frame (e.g. 2 frames to the right)?
Tools to offset the position of selected layers as a sequence (e.g. +/- [value] frames, so each layer will be [value] frames placed behing the previous one).
Let's say you've a bundle of duplicated composite shots (~30) containing a cool particle effect. The core compisition has a nice 'fade-in' effect for the particles. Now, you want to offset each clone by one frame, so the with clone will start at frame0, the second clone at frame1 and the last clone at frame 29. It's a lot of work to do that by hand. The idea: Just select all layers in the desired order, open up the new tool, enter a value of 1 and hit OK.
Maybe, this functionality is something for an embedding scripting support, so you can write a simple script like:
newX = 0;

for each layer in selection do

layer.x = newX++;

Best regards,
Marc

Do you don't mean that:
Add a Path Tool, where splines can be created for other objects to be parented to. (Majahr Pictures)
Regards,
Marc
• Ok, then just magic wand for mask, if it's possible.
Path is different in my mind: I mean a line, to which an object, a point or particle emitter can be attached to, to follow. Maybe a mask's path can be converted to this kind of way, road, movement path.
In this tutorial, a path made by hand. But what about making a path on an edge of a bluescreen matted object, or something like that :)

This is from another thread I started, so i just copied in here, to make sure it gets on the wishlist:
Hi!
I have an idea for adding some functionality to HitFilm. Add a TAB named Community or something, between the Export and Help TAB, and that Community TAB would change to RED color or get a banner on it that said New PM or Reply or UPDATE, whenever one of your threads got a reply or whenever you got a PM.
This way you could keep working in HitFilm, and still see when something relevant for you happened on the forums or someone sent you a PM.
Especially, since I feel there is such a strong link between the forums and Hitlink. I would be lost without the forums, since this SW is so new to me.
I think that would be a cool feature, what do you think?
...
Yes, im sure it will be a little tricky. One way of doing it could be to have the HitFilm client poll your server every 30 seconds or so, too see if there are any updates. To have the client poll the server is the easier solution.
Of course you would have to do some programming on the server side as well.
And I guess one would have to take into account that some users maybe running HitFilm on a laptop offline, not connected to the internet, so then HitFilm could at startup do a ping or something, and if no response just stop the polling.
Glad you guys liked the idea!
• Here a suggestion I had in another thread:
Hi!
I was using the reference manual, and wanted to go back a step or two, to what I previously looked at, but
there was no Back button, so no way for me to go back to what I last(previously) looked at. Only option is to search again or click through the menues. I suggest you implement a back button in the Help system, so it's easier to manouvre around.

OK, but with the feature of turning it off when I'm deeply working on a project. :)

• Introduce 'Tweeners' on the timeline:-
In the space between keyframes, have the ability to edit the way the frames inbetween keyframes are handled ie:-
Linear - Pretty much how it works now i think,
Square waveform (great for regular flashing effects like light etc),
Sine waveform (great for lighing effects which have to slowly brighten & slowly decay),
Triangle Waveform (bit like the Sine wave but a little more linear),
User Defined (Great for adjusting one of the said preset types but with the ability to adjust the waveform with splines to get it just right shape you need).
:D

Thanks for the explanation of tubulence, that makes sense and would be a cool addition. I've not messed with C4D in probably 7 years, so I don't know what its Wind effect does. What I'm thinking is that Wind is a basic force which pushes the particles in a specific direction, which is easily handled by a global force. Apparently wind in C4D is different?
How do I drag a layer exactly to specific frame (e.g. 2 frames to the right)?
Move the playhead 2 frames right of the start of the clip, and drag, the layer start will snap to the playhead position. Or, type in a specific timecode at the top left of the timeline, to position the playhead there, then drag the layer to that position.
I've added in the others as well, thanks again for all the suggestions guys.

I would like to recommend different kinds of lights (EX: Point, Ambient, Spotlight, etc.)
And I know that we can make the cone radius 180*, but it would be easier to have more light types.

PScamm- if you right-click on any keyframe, you can control the interpolation method it uses. Linear will create a straight line from one to the next, Smooth will ease in and out, giving more of a sine shape. Smooth In and Smooth Out combine the two, so you get a sine-type shape on one side of the keyframe, but stay linear on the other. I understand that you describe some other stuff as well, which I have added to the list, but thought I'd mention this in case you weren't familiar with it.
Thanks!

Good news for you! All of these light types, plus Directional, are already available. In the Layer Properties for any light object, there is a Type menu where you can choose the type of the light.

• Global Speed parameter for the Particle Simulator
I'd like to see a new parameter in the same hierarchy as the time-shift property to control the global speed of ALL emitters: Global Speed.
Example:
You've created a complex effect by keyframing a lot of parameters like speed, accelaration, force and so on. Let's also say, you've more than one emitter created to this simulator. After rendering, you'll notice, that the overall speed of the animation is to fast. What can you do? You had to re-keyframe every single parameter to fit your needs.
With the "Global Speed" parameter, you only had to decrease the default value of 100% down to 80% for example. The parameter range could be: 0%..100%..300% which allows you to slow down or speed up the whole animation. Another sideeffect is the possibility to freeze the animation (matrix effect) if you set the value to 0%. If you could animate this parameter, you can do a lot of nice tricks with it :D :D :D
Best regards,
Marc
• This topic is also good for exploring hidden features, like tweening features just above :)
• As we talked about in the old Thread: Rubber-Band-Editing for easier oder better controlable Transitions in the Editing Part.
• I don’t know if anyone has mention this but it would be nice if the Point layer would be also control from the main screen via graphical point that also shows previous points with a history of the trajectory path, like for example the LIFE module in particle effect section shows a phantom/history (doted lines) of the changes of other settings.
This will show me the path of all point in the layer at the same time, like the masking points, maybe also tweak them from there?
I hope you understand this.
• The 'Rate of Fire' control in the muzzle flash generator is too random. From how I understand it, I would use that for making machine gun muzzle flashes right? The thing is though, it's so random in the way the flashes appear that I can't really predict what the final effect will look like.
I know in real life muzzle flashes don't appear in every shot, but this isn't real life. So if I could control how random I want the flashes to be that would be great. I find myself keyframing a lot when it comes to machine gun fire; so a way to just set how often I want them without the generator randomize it would be great.
Of course, if I'm missing something here than let me know!

Changing the Speed in the Lifetime control will have this exact effect. Even if you have already built a gradient in the Lifetime for speed, bumping the entire gradient up or down will increase or decrease the overall speed accordingly.

This I totally agree with. For doing time-freeze type effects, a wasy to globally stop the effect would be great. Added!

This sounds like the Paths/Splines that were already suggested.

Nope, I don't think you are missing anything. If you want the flashes randomized, use the Randomizer. If you want exact control over when they appear, you can keyframe it. I can see a fixed-interval control being handy. If the square-waveform interpolation that was suggested earlier is ever implemented, it would handle this nicely.
• Ok thanks.
• Not sure if this has already been suggested....
But with the Light tool, it would be great if you could change the "Rotation" of this, as currently the light only seems to point down, unless I am missing something? If there is already a way to do this, then it's not a problem. But currently how I see if you can only move the light up, down, left & right....this is very limited when working in 3D
• Wow, you guys and gals are going to be busy. This isn't a feature request. But how about a video to feature your new design team. They deserve recognition. Look forward to all the new features.
